Mondovino: the film by Jonathan Nossiter

Filmed in Tuscany, Bordeaux, Napa Valley and South America and initially intended for television, Mondovino highlights the contrasts between big finance, which owns a large slice of the wine production and those who strenuously defend registered designations of origin.

The film really wants to highlight the dichotomy between the real wine connoisseurs and the businessmen of the capitalist industry, capable 'only' of seeing a return in money in the vineyards. A real battle between the independence of the purists and globalisation driven by profit at any cost, which leads to the extinguishing of passion.
What has been described by some critics as a little film is actually a precise look, with documentary features, at the consequences of a globalisation without rules that tends increasingly to engulf food and wine excellence.
Two opposing worlds confront each other in the 158 minutes of the story, which is often tentative in its filming and with unexceptional stylistic choices: the traditional methodology of wine productiona, fruit of the passion and love for the land of small farmers, and that which instead sacrifices taste and identity in the face of a modern flattening son of money and productivity at all costs.
The answer, of course, is contained in the aroma of must that carries with it the toil, the history of a land, the rhythms of nature, the strength to hope that, in the end, we all agree on what the right direction is.
