The film by New Yorker Nora Ephron intertwines the lives of Julie Powell and Julia Child. Julie and Julia are two women who really existed but have never met. The two protagonists appear at first sight but above all temporarily very distant. Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep, lives in 1950s McCarthyism America; Julie Powell on the other hand (Amy Adams) is a young woman dissatisfied with her professional life, who in the early 2000s decides to start a challenging and creative project.
Julie in fact immersed herself in the creation of a cookery blog, challenging herself to produce 524 recipes in 365 days, slavishly following the first French cookery book in English that Julia Child wrote in 1961 during her stay in Paris, Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
Julia was a revolutionary figure for her time, liberating women from the stereotype of wife and mother, forced to spend her days in the kitchen just to fulfil her duties. The cook and writer turned the 1950s United States upside down, choosing to devote her life to what made her fulfilled and fulfilled, always alongside her husband Paul Cushing Child, who supported and encouraged Julia in all her greatest ambitions with love and admiration.
The film takes us through the journey undertaken by Julia, in deciding to be overwhelmed by the world of cooking. We witness the journey of a woman who does not know, from the outset, what and where this will take her. What soon becomes clear, however, is that her commitment, dedication and passion will make her a happy woman. In the American film, her character is played by Meryl Streepwho masterfully seasoned the woman's character with eccentric sympathy and affectionate self-mockery.
The witty reproduction of the cook is intertwined with the story of Julie Powell, who, half a century apart in New York, finds herself working for the call centre of the company in charge of rebuilding the area affected by the attacks of 11 September 2001. Disgruntled and dissatisfied, Julie catapults herself into her cooking blogging project following in the footsteps of Julia, who in time becomes a mother figure, an imaginary friend and a great source of inspiration. Although Julia's adventures in Paris are more interesting and compelling than Julie's vicissitudes in New York, just as it is not possible to compare the two women's achievements, the two lives come together and their experiences stand side by side, portraying the social and cultural changes in the condition of women in the two eras.
